CRIB RECALL: Generation 2 Wordwide Safety Craft Cribs

"Consumers should immediately stop using Generation 2 Worldwide "SafetyCraft" brand full-size and portable drop-side cribs because their plastic hardware breaks easily, posing a death risk to infants, the government said on Thursday.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement that the cribs appeared to use the same drop-side hardware as the Generation 2 Worldwide ChildESIGNS brand recalled a year ago.
"This hardware ... can fail and place infants and toddlers at risk of strangulation and suffocation," the CPSC said, warning against attempts to fix the cribs.
CPSC said it had reports of three infant suffocation deaths and 20 drop-side related incidents involving previously recalled models of Generation 2 Worldwide and ChildESIGNS cribs with plastic hardware similar to "SafetyCraft" cribs.
CPSC has limited information about the exact model numbers because the Alabama-based company ceased operations in 2005.
However, the cribs are known to have "SafetyCraft" on a label on either the head or foot boards. The cribs were used in homes and child-care facilities. Consumers can identify the Foundations SafetyCraft crib by "Foundations" printed on the mattress support assembly instructions label under the crib mattress, the CPSC said. "

Crib Recall: Over 40,000 Cribs

The recalled Ethan Allen, Angel Line and Victory Land Heritage Collection 3-in-1 cribs have drop-sides that can detach due to faulty hardware or wear and tear, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. This can create a gap where young children can be trapped or suffocated.
A detached drop-side can also allow a child to fall out of the crib.
Drop-sides have been blamed in the deaths of at least 32 infants and toddlers since 2000, and are suspected in another 14 infant fatalities. In the past five years, more than 9 million drop-side cribs have been recalled.

CPSC urged parents to stop using the cribs and contact the companies for a free repair kit. The agency suggested bassinets, play yards or toddler beds as potential safe alternatives, depending on the age of the child.
For more information contact Ethan Allen at 888-339-9398 or visit any Ethan Allen store, contact Angel Line at 800-889-8158 and contact Victory Land Group at 866-499-2099.

USCPSC Voted to Mandatory Standard for Cribs

Finally! The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has voted unanimously in favor of new proposed mandatory standards for cribs.
The new rules would render many cribs in the country as not up to code, would ban the manufacture and sale of drop-side cribs, and mandate better mattress support, sturdier hardware and better quality wood for crib construction.

Between November 2007 and April of this year, there were 36 deaths associated with crib structural problems, according to Commission Chairwoman Inez Tenenbaum.
Hazards in cribs include faulty hardware, dangerous gaps created from mattress support failures, and poor wood quality with crib slats that can be broken easily. The new standards aim to eliminate gaps where babies could become entrapped and suffocate, and to prevent babies from falling out of the crib.

Recall: Over 2 Million Cribs

Over 2 million cribs have been recalled in June, primarily drop-side versions. Here is a summary of brands:

- 750,000 Jenny Lind drop-side cribs distributed by Evenflo Inc.
- 747,000 Delta drop-side cribs. Delta is also urging parents to check all fixed and drop-side cribs that use wooden stabilizer bars to support the mattress. The company says the bars can be installed upside down, causing the mattress platform to collapse.
- 306,000 Bonavita, Babi Italia and ISSI drop-side cribs manufactured by LaJobi Inc.
- 130,000 Jardine drop-side cribs imported by Toys R Us.
- 156,000 Million Dollar Baby drop-side cribs.
- 50,000 Simmons drop-side cribs.
- 40,000 to 50,000 Child Craft brand stationary-side cribs and an unknown number of Child Craft brand drop-sides. Child Craft ceased operations last summer and sold its name to Foundations Worldwide Inc., which did not manufacture or sell any of the recalled cribs but will offer rebates for some of them.
